Blade inspection

A maintenance challenge for wind power operators

As wind farms are installed further offshore, turbine blades are becoming even larger. During the manufacturing and installation process, significant damage can be caused to the blades, especially during tower construction and installation. Normal operations can damage blades further, as problems are caused by sand, saltwater, corrosion and extreme weather conditions. Even small imperfections can have a substantial impact on operation.

Inspection benefits

  • Save costs and reduce project risks

  • Increase production and improve efficiency

  • Reduce chance of downtime

  • Detect potential problems early

  • Plan maintenance effectively

Visual and dimensional inspection using state-of-the-art cameras and lasers

Carrying out internal inspections of turbine blades gives clients a comprehensive picture of the interior. Not all defects can be assessed visually, so using a combined camera and laser system provides the most comprehensive type of assessment. Our system identifies the widest possible range of defects, such as corrosion/erosion, pitting, wrinkling, buckling, discolouration, oxidation and protrusion. It produces instant 2D profiles or 3D cloud models, providing full statistical analysis using our sophisticated software, developed in-house.

Cutting-edge robotic crawlers

Award-winning AUGA.node inspection technology is moved into position with our robust AGILITY range of robotic crawlers. Short, medium and long-range inspection is available, from distances of 30m to >200m.
