OMS supports McDermott showcase to celebrate opening of new Welding and Technology Center of Excellence

The OMS team was delighted to attend McDermott’s latest Pipeline Production Group meeting, which took place at their brand-new welding and technology centre in the Jebel Ali Freezone in Dubai.

The event was a showcase of various McDermott services related to welding, inspection and remediation. As experts in pipeline integrity, OMS demonstrated our latest weld inspection and remediation technology, SmartGrind, which has been approved by Saudi Aramco. This ground-breaking system locates, identifies, quantifies and solves a wide range of weld defects through targeted grinding, leaving weld surfaces stronger and better prepared for coating. Welds can be accessed via robotic crawler or attached to the ILUC, eliminating the need for man-entry and thus improving safety. Production can proceed efficiently with reduced need for expensive and time-consuming cut-outs.

Marcus Smiles, OMS Global Manager, said, ‘The establishment of the new Welding and Technology Center of Excellence demonstrates McDermott’s commitment to improving all aspects of energy production throughout their global operations. As long-standing McDermott partners, we were pleased to showcase our state-of-the-art inspection and remediation technology at this impressive facility.’

The newly opened McDermott Welding and Technology Center of Excellence provides a ‘single point of execution for customer and project-focused activities.’ It includes an S-lay line-up and firing line simulation area, a J-Lay rotating table and other vessel simulation capabilities.
